The way that God disciplines Miriam may seem harsh to us, since slandering others is 

common part of life, often within the church. Many Bible commentaries state that Miriam 

received the weight of the punishment because she likely started the negative speech about 

Moses. However, the main focus of this passage is God’s response to slander. What do you 

think was in Miriam and Aaron’s heart to incite such behavior against their own brother, the 

one whom had led them out of slavery? Why do you think the Lord chose leprosy and 

temporary exile as the consequence for speaking against someone else? How would the 

Lord like to heal you from participation in slander so that you can be a source of blessing for 

others?
